PARTICLE TRACERS

The MecHydroLab has a developed expertise in surface flow measurement through high-visibility particle tracers. Our research team uses both commercial and in-house synthesized tracers. In the lab, we fabricate environmentally-friendly fluorescent particles from natural white beeswax.

FLOW SENSING PROTOTYPES

The MecHydroLab hosts a number of apparatuses for flow measurement through fluorescence sensing. The apparatus displayed in this picture is composed of a horizontal telescopic system of aluminum bars that rests on adjustable steel tripods. The horizontal telescopic system allows for a total extension of the setup of approximately three meters. Another telescopic system of vertical aluminum bars is connected to the lamp case. The case contains an array of several UV lamps in parallel and series connections. A camera is connected to the telescopic system through a vertical bar. The distance of the lamp and video units from the surface can be adjusted according to illumination and flow conditions.

PORTABLE CHANNEL FLOW SENSING PROTOTYPE

This portable video acquisition system for remote flow measurement includes a telescopic aluminum bar that can be extended up to 2 m. At one end of the bar, an orthogonal aluminum pole is connected to host two low power green lasers. At the intersection of the pole and the bar, a GoPro video camera is encased in a waterproof box. Preliminary calibration analyses ensure that the camera axis is consistently kept perpendicular to the water surface.

AERIAL SENSING PLATFORMS

The MecHydroLab actively conducts aerial surveys for environmental monitoring through a DJI Phantom 2 drone and in-house built aerial sensing platforms. Please consult the Multimedia section for videos captured from our aerial platforms.
